STORYBOARD

this animated storyboard was our original plan for our thriller title sequence.

This storyboard was our initial plan with only one character. We developed it by adding another character as we found that it was too short and pretty boring by watching someone walk to their car. It would have worked well if we were able to film inside an underground car park but it was restricted because of the privacy reasons with the plate numbers.

Question 1

The 9 shots used in the film Touch Of Evil are revelant to our 9 shots in our film. The close up shots of partcular props such as shot 1 on row 1 of the above has an indication a bomb, clarifying something thrilling will happen later on. We used this type of stratedgy too, when we use a close up shot of the mobile phone, and the call doesn’t go through. Creating suspense.

The title of the film has been set up on top of the footage whereas in our film we decided to have the title on a black background as we thought this would be much more effective on creating suspense.

The shots above are used well, such as the establishing shot the 1^st one on the 2^nd row, we also used this shot to indicate the audience where setting was, allowing them to be less confused.

The clothing the characters are dressed in Touch of Evil show the business adults, however in our film, we decided the characters should dress in new modern fashion, and this would enable to attract a young audience. The props used in Touch of Evil also indicate the type of class the characters may come from, the brief case, car showing they most likely to be middle or upper class, especially since at that point in time. We have used a car as well however; we use props such as make-up, bags to indicate their youthfulness.



Question 2

Our group decided to base the characters on the main character in Marathon Man (1976) Thomas Levy “Babe”, Dustin Hoffman. As the image shows he is a passive character, to

which the audience feel sypathetic throught out the film.

We show this through the way the characters actions are, as they are any girls minding their own business, when something bad happens. The shots we used to allow the audience to be sympathetic towards the characters is by using Close-up shots as they would give a view of the emotions the characters have. We also used an ariel shot to shot the originality of these characters.


Question 3 + 4

This video, which I found on you tube a popular video-networking site, has been seen by a lot of viewers. As I watched the film I found it was very thrilling and the way it had been composed was particularly well.
The non-diegetic sound as very helpful creating suspense and horror, the way the titles are laid out matches the type of thriller film, what was also very effective. The video doesn’t include too much footage yet it has a similar effect to the student films I have watched. Less is more. As our film has a low budget, the better and most effective way to enable our footage to be aware and popular is to post the video on as much social networking sites as possible, such as

These social networking sites will enable us to have as much as publicity without having the need to pay only by a subscription that will take no longer than 20 min for each. We will also be able to see if people like the video, some people may contribute to comments helping us to have an overview of what people think of our film. Many low budget productions companies also look on the net for inspiration on what to base their up-coming film, they may have a look at our film, and if we’re lucky they may contact us.

Question 5


The type of audience I think our film would attract is:

Jennifer, 18 years old studying, is currently studying. Understands the plots of stories in many films, Her hobbies would be going to the cinema with friends. Likes the adrenalin of being thrilled, is into fashion. Her ideal saturday would be to go shopping in the morning -Topshop-, then she'll meet with friends to go cinema, go home and out to party during the evening.

As our film is more of a modern film. It is based in London therefore much of the Londoners watching the film would recognize the streets we have based our film on. The misc en scene also shows the type of audience we want to attract the “Paul’s Boutique” and clothing the characters show how fashionable the movie is. However, on the last scene of the title sequence, as the character is walking down the stairs, an arm reaches out to grab her. The clothing used shows a masculine figure, the leather to show aggression, and the colour of being black indicates danger.

Looking back at my preliminary tasks, i can see we have improved dramaitically; especially the editing.

When setting our storyboard we limited our barriers, as to where we we should set the location and what camera shots we should use. the camera shots we used in the match cut, were establishing, close up and ariel shots that worked well with the footage.

While filming we didn't take as much notice on focusing the footage. When looking back at the filming of the match-cut we realised some of the footage was blurry that really messed the footage. We only used an a classroom for the set making the footage dull. looking back we could have used ariel shots of the building etc. Making the footage much more interesting.

When filming Never Alone, we took in mind the problems we had encountered when filming, making sure we pressed 'User 1' to assure the footage was as clear as crystal. We wanted to make the audience aware of where the location was by using establishing; estates in London.

The editing of our match-cut excercise, was good, but some scenes didn't look as if the footage was continued on. We worked well when editing the film, we divided the group into 3, so each person had a big role in editing. we changed every lesson assuring the aims were done, compared to our preliminary excercise we used titles and sound matching the theme of the film.

Our group wanted to have as much feedback as possible. We recorded some feedback asking what was good about the film, what was bad and what could have been improved. These questions were essential as they enabled us to have a view on what people thought on our piece.

From the feedback from the audience, I can see our film was a success as the comments are positive, however the constructive critism given we would work on this, so our film is compleately good.

Overall, i think the work we have done is great, we worked efficiantly in a froup helping each other whenever the was a problem. As we came up with the setting and plot of the film on our own. we also tried to use less help from teachers as we wanted to prove we could do very well on our own. As we looked at other work from other students we could see they came up with originality in their work like our group did.

Live type is a programme on which we can type texts added in films, used mostly credits and titles.

We can use effects to create more suspense by changing colour and font.

We save the document, then importing it on to Final Cut Pro then rendering it.

Sound Type is also a programme where you can compose music. There are different type of sounds, the sound is also what a makes films create different emotions, in this case more Thrilling.

'NEVER ALONE' Location Shots

The shots show the image of one of the co-stars who feature in “Never Alone”. These images show the area surrounding the underground car park. The idea was a woman becoming vulnerable in a dark, underground environment as she and the audience, are unable to find out the person who is lurking in the background. The underground car park was originally used in our storyboard but this became unavailable due to our time to film the sequence. Showing an urban setting, this could leave the audience to suggest the type of plots which could be associated with the woman featured in the images.The first image denotes a close-up of a woman walking down stairs looking straight ahead. She is wearing smart yet casual clothing consisting of a grey blazer jacket, navy floral top, navy jeans and black heels accompanied with a black bag. This suggests the status if the woman as it deprives a common stereotype of women being able to spend time on their appearance. The second and third image denotes close-ups of the woman’s feet establishing the movement towards the car park. This acts as establishing shots as it leaves the audience settled to the environment and displays the overall mood of the scene. The last image denotes the woman walking down the stairs which could connote her vulnerability towards her surroundings. This would have been portrayed in the car park where both images would have been linked leading for tension to occur as the audience would wonder about the cause of her innocence and how this would be portrayed.

Recently on the news world wide a natural disaster happened an earthquake struck a Carribean Nation Haiti. The earthquake measured a magnitude of 7.o. Natural disasters are used in thriller films, to show what may of have happened at the time giving the audience and insight.

Films like the one above show that films can be made from an idea of natrual disasters occruing in the world. They make the audience feel suspense and worry.

A man was accused of a jigsaw murder, he left different parts of a victims bodyacroos England. This could be seen as a pschological thriller film.

Films like Saw can be related to these type's of news.

Religion

I like religion in thriller films, because they give a more realistic perspective. That makes me along with the audience wonder about real life events, by including religion the audience may be aware already of the ideas used in the movie which makes it more thrilling an example would be ...

this film uses the concept of religion, that made it a BIG seller.

Pschological

I believe using pschology in a thriller movie makes it more appeling to the audience, because its not always the same clichè plot. The use of pschology enables the plot to varify, without the audience becoming confused insted making them realise what they may not have seen an important part to the film. An example.. i love the way pschology is used in this film because it shocked audience with unpredicatable endings and made me feel very dumb for not spotting some of the most important parts of the film Eventhough this film is a horror film also it uses thriller, because it shocks audiences in the way a triller film would do.

Crime

when crime is used in a thriller film it makes the audience drawn with tension.

This film showed crime being used tothe extream, with the predicatable acts made the audience feel much more aware and confused at times why a character won't do the obvious thing.

The art of title; Halloween analysation

Halloween (1978)

the title sequence of this film is very effective especially for the genre of thriller.

It is very simple yet very affective. the pumpkin symbolizing halloween. The large shot of the pumpkin with rapid piano music gives a feel of creepiness. The pumpkin representing the holiday; halloween, "the most scariest day of the year" the style of the titles start of with pastel orange colour, however the colour changes as the shots become closer to the pumpkin.

When the extreme close up shot, the font is and orange reddish colour symbolizing fire and danger. the opening shot indicates the production company "A compass international pictures release" The extreme long shot shows title the name of the director of the film John Carpenter and the name of the film which is Halloween; the colour of the word Halloween changes from red to orange, this is used to emphasis the word. Then a long shot introduces the main character, Jamie Lee Curtis a popular actress and P J Soles, analyzing the main characters to be females the audience would have an insight, stereotypically females are vulnerable and passive comparing to males. making it more of a thriller, the audience would feel paranoid and fear; especially the female viewers.

The film was produced in the late seventies, therefore having the limited resources to make as scariest as possible however the simplicity of the film is what makes it much scarier, the pumpkin alone makes the audience have an imagination of their own. Nowadays technology allows film producers to have an advantage of making great films, however this film is one of the best horror films of all time. comparing Halloween 1978 to Halloween 2007 the title sequence of the original film is much longer to the recent one, the recent one is only one shot to analyze the name of the film which last for approximately two seconds.

The title sequence appeals to me because it gives me the feel of anxiety and curiosity of the plot.

Paranoid

This image is of a survailance camera to emphesis the word paranoia. we have taken this picture because every human living in london are being constantly watched by these survailance cameras. Paranoia is a psychological disorder, people who suffer from this disorder, feel they are being constantly watched, the feel is anxiety or fear. The term matches the thriller genre since the victim always has a sense of paranoia.

Calm

This hand image was to indicate the word calm. The hand which could also been seen as a waving hand shows peace and togetherness. Thriller films give this feel to the audience either when the vitims safe or the murderer is killed etc. we had this picture taken on one of the clear windows the people walking by, have no idea whats happening. This also occurs in a thriller, for example when a person's being brutally killed, and the neighbours having no clue about whats happening next door.

Clostrophobic

In this picture shows a girl her reflection on the window door, with a lock on the outside to show her entrapment. that represents claustrophobic. in thriller films, claustrophobia is what one of the character in the film is encountering such as a person being chased by a murderer to a criminal chased by the police. Because when a person feels claustrophobic they feel they're in a small place alone, they tend to become less calm and start to sweat.

City

This picture emphasis the word "city". this image shows a landscape view of the buildings in London. thriller films mostly tend to set in a big city, recognizable to the audience. This helps the audience feel threatened. also because of the numerous of places roads, nowhere is really safe, anyone could be hiding anywhere.

Marathon Man (1976)

Marathon Man is a crime-thriller film. The main character being the famously known Dustin Hoffman at his younger age. The filmn contains many scenes of suspension.

Two examples is the bathroom scene and as the main character "Babe" is being chased around by a car.

The bathroom scene is after Babe's brother has been murdered, which he then ends up at Babes doorstep. He lays in the bath tub, his frustrated emotive face shows the confusion and sorro. he then hears the diegetic sound of the opening creaking door, then suddenly reacts. the lightning shows the shadow that is coming towards the bathroom he is in. The sound is very slow and almost creepy like, but as soon as Babe reacts by running to shut the door the music becomes rapid and loud. making the audience much more anxious.

The use of sound and lightning shows how effective it adds suspense and thriller to the film.

The other example is as Babe manages to escape from his captors he is then is hunt down by two men driving a car however, babe runs. As he looks for help, the music is orquestral and livid, when he is spotted by the hunts men he runs through motorways which almost caused his death. the music is very jumpy whenever the men are close the music louder and when Babe hides its at a low tone, which fits with the scene. his facial expression is worried, making the audience feel sorrow, making them want to help; making them involved in the predicament.

This thriller film uses the sub-genre of crime, this enables the audience to become more attracted to the film.

Definition of suspense: Arlington road

The opening scene of the film Arlington Road (1999) creates suspense by the way they have used camera work, sound and editing.

The definition of suspense is a feeling of excitement or uncertainty anticipation of an approaching climax at one point of a film.

The film opens with images of a white gate and black background that could symbolize the innocence thus the evil that the film contains. titles overlapping to state the production companies and name of the cast.

Mid-shot and close up shots of static images enable the audience to have an insight of what the film could be about, image of the dog, toddler and houses show of suburban america; a safe environment, the toddler shows how passive the characters may be. However the director has used different colour such as the negative effective and red colours which could be refered to the blood or danger involved in the film. other images, such as the star and road sign give a creepy feel to the audience, other meanings to the film.

Establishing shots are used to show the audience what is the setting and what the film could be related to.

The non-diegetic sound in the background is of a dramatic genre indicating it will be a thriller film. The editing of this film is a rythmic cut, matching the music.
